Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has commented on speculation linking Turkish-origin German international midfielder Ilkay Gundogan with a move to Galatasaray, emphasizing the crowded squad situation at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup match against UAE side Al-Ain, Guardiola said there are too many players in the squad, suggesting some departures are likely.
“We cannot continue with 26 or 27 players; many will not get playing time,” he stated.
Guardiola dismissed rumors about Gundogan’s transfer, adding, “There is no development; I haven’t spoken to him about it. If he wasn’t part of the team, he wouldn’t be here.”
He stressed Gundogan remains in his plans for the season.
The Spanish coach said he would ideally keep all players but fears dissatisfaction among those sidelined.
“Players will be unhappy, frustrated, and I do not want that,” Guardiola explained.
Guardiola noted the transfer window is still open, and changes could happen gradually before the season starts. “We will see what happens step by step,” he added.
The Turkish-origin international returned to Manchester City last season, featuring in 51 matches, scoring 3 goals, and providing 7 assists.
