Jhon Duran scored in the 83rd minute to cap Fenerbahce's dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over 10-man Besiktas in a chaotic Turkish Super Lig derby on Sunday.
The Colombian striker's decisive goal completed a remarkable turnaround for the visiting side, which trailed 2-0 before Besiktas had midfielder Orkun Kokcu sent off in the 26th minute.
Duran, who entered as a substitute in the 66th minute, broke the deadlock with seven minutes remaining in regulation. His goal gave Fenerbahce all three points in the 11th week of the Trendyol Super Lig season, moving the club to 22 points with a 6-4-0 record. Besiktas dropped to 17 points with a 5-2-3 mark.
The match statistics reflected Fenerbahce 'dominance after Besiktas went down a man, with the visitors recording 23 shot attempts to Besiktas's nine and controlling 68.5% of possession.
Besiktas appeared in control after El Bilal Toure opened the scoring in the fifth minute and Emir Han Topcu doubled the advantage in the 22nd. But the match shifted dramatically four minutes later when Kokcu was initially shown a yellow card for a foul on Edson Álvarez.
Referee Ali Yilmaz reviewed the challenge on VAR and upgraded the punishment to a straight red card, leaving Besiktas to play more than an hour with 10 men.
The decision infuriated Besiktas manager Sergen Yalcin, who was also sent off after directing fierce protests at Yilmaz. The referee walked to the technical area to issue Yalcin a red card.
Fenerbahce pulled one back through Ismail Yuksek in the 32nd minute, then equalized in stoppage time of the first half when Marco Asensio scored in the 48th minute.
The Spanish midfielder had been struck by an object thrown from the stands in the 30th minute while preparing to take a corner kick. Asensio went down after the item hit his head but continued playing.
Fenerbahce made tactical adjustments at halftime, bringing on Talisca. The visitors made additional substitutions throughout the second half, with Oguz Aydin entering in the 72nd minute and both Duran and Sebastian Szymanski coming on in the 66th and 80th minutes, respectively.
Fenerbahce made two unsuccessful penalty appeals in the first half, both involving forward Kerem Akturkoglu. The first came in the 13th minute when Akturkoglu went down following contact with Gabriel Paulista in the box. VAR official Sarper Baris Saka did not advise a review.
A second penalty claim came in the second minute of first-half stoppage time after Akturkoglu fell following a challenge from Salih Ucan. Yılmaz initially appeared to signal toward the penalty spot before waving play on.
The match ended with multiple yellow cards issued, including bookings for Duran, Akturkoglu, Álvarez and Nelson Semedo from Fenerbahce, and Topcu from Besiktas. Besiktas brought on Tammy Abraham in the 86th minute and Milot Rashica in the 58th as they tried unsuccessfully to protect their lead.
