Manchester City and Liverpool secured places in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals Wednesday after overcoming Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea in penalty shootouts, with both matches remaining level after regulation time.
City twice fought back to draw 2-2 with Brighton before winning 4-3 on penalties at Etihad Stadium, while Liverpool edged Chelsea 6-5 in a shootout following a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Brighton opened the scoring through Malick Yalcouye, but Mateo Kovacic brought City level with a low shot from outside the penalty area.
Georginio Rutter restored Brighton's advantage shortly after halftime before Vitor Reis scored his first City goal, turning in Rayan Cherki's free kick with less than 20 minutes remaining.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match went to penalties, where Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele initially gave the visitors an advantage by saving Kovacic's fourth attempt.
However, City goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli turned the shootout around by saving Brighton's sixth and seventh attempts from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk, sealing a 4-3 victory.
At Anfield, Chelsea took the lead in the 38th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo inside the penalty area, allowing Morgan Rogers to convert from the spot.
Liverpool responded almost immediately when Wesley Fofana was penalized for handball following a corner, and Cody Gakpo stepped up to equalize.
Both goalkeepers kept their teams in contention after the break, with Liverpool's Giorgi Mamardashvili denying Rogers and Pedro Neto, while Chelsea's Mike Penders saved attempts from Ronald Araujo and Bradley Barcola.
The match eventually went to penalties, and after both sides converted their first five attempts, the shootout entered sudden death, in which each team takes additional penalties until one scores and the other misses.
Joe Gomez converted Liverpool's sixth attempt before Fofana failed to score for Chelsea, handing the home side a 6-5 shootout victory.
Elsewhere in Wednesday's Carabao Cup fixtures, Sunderland beat Brentford 3-2, Bournemouth claimed a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace defeated Fulham 1-0.
