Real Madrid secured a 4-1 home victory over Sevilla on Sunday as Kylian Mbappe scored twice and Turkish international Arda Guler struck a spectacular opening goal, lifting the Spanish giants to third place in La Liga ahead of next weekend’s El Clasico against Barcelona.
The victory at the Santiago Bernabeu brought Madrid to 21 points from nine matches, leaving them six points behind league leaders Barcelona before the two rivals meet on Oct. 25.
Guler broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, connecting with Yan Diomande’s pass and curling a first-time left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area into the far corner, beyond Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.
The 21-year-old midfielder continued his strong start to the season, bringing his league tally to two goals and three assists in nine appearances.
Mbappe doubled Madrid’s advantage just seven minutes later after receiving a backheel pass from Jude Bellingham. The French forward broke into the penalty area, rounded Vlachodimos and slotted the ball home.
Sevilla nearly pulled a goal back before halftime, but Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois got down to deny Lucien Agoume with a low save.
Madrid extended their lead in the 63rd minute when Mbappe converted a penalty after Andres Castrin brought him down inside the area. The French striker opted for a Panenka-style finish, delicately chipping the ball toward the center of the goal.
Sevilla briefly narrowed the gap in the 80th minute when substitute Manu Bueno fired a left-footed shot into the far corner following a pass from Lucas Stassin.
However, Diomande restored Madrid’s three-goal cushion just two minutes later, racing forward to meet Aurelien Tchouameni’s cross-field pass before sending a powerful strike into the top corner.
The result left Sevilla sixth in the standings with 14 points, while Real Madrid moved into third place ahead of their trip to Barcelona for El Clasico, the highly anticipated rivalry match between the two Spanish clubs, on Sunday.
