France became the first semifinalist of the 2026 World Cup after beating Morocco 2-0, while Kylian Mbappe moved level with Lionel Messi at the top of the tournament scoring chart.
The quarterfinals began in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, with the Golden Boot race continuing to draw attention.
The Golden Boot is the award given to the player who scores the most goals at the World Cup.
Mbappe scored the goal that put France ahead against Morocco and raised his 2026 World Cup tally to eight goals. That moved him level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who also has eight goals in the tournament.
The goal also lifted Mbappe's all-time World Cup total to 20. Messi remains ahead in that overall list with 21 goals.
Messi and Mbappe now share the lead in the 2026 World Cup scoring race with eight goals each. Norway's Erling Haaland follows with seven goals, while England's Harry Kane has six.
France's Ousmane Dembele is also among the leading scorers with five goals, adding another French name to the top of the list as the tournament moves deeper into the knockout rounds.
