Türkiye's western province of Afyonkarahisar is preparing to host over 500,000 spectators for the World Motocross Championship's MXGP Türkiye round and the NG Afyon Motofest, scheduled for Sept. 2-6.
Preparations at the Afyonkarahisar Motor Sports Center are entering their final phase, with Afyonkarahisar Mayor Burcu Koksal inspecting the venue and receiving an update on the organization's progress from Turkish Motorcycling Federation Vice President Mahmut Nedim Akulke.
Speaking to reporters at the site, Koksal noted that MXGP Turkiye will be held in Afyonkarahisar for the ninth consecutive year, a streak she said reflects the province's standing and consistency in the international sporting arena.
This year's edition will feature 150 athletes from 25 countries. Attendance is expected to match or exceed previous years, when the event drew more than 500,000 spectators.
"This year too we expect at least 500,000, even more spectators in Afyonkarahisar," Koksal said, pointing to the economic benefits the event brings through visitor spending on food, accommodation and city tourism.
Koksal added that the program extends beyond racing, incorporating additional sporting events and concerts alongside the motocross competition.
The municipality will deploy roughly 150 personnel to support operations before, during and after the event, Koksal said, describing the five-day program as combining both sport and entertainment at the Motor Sports Center.
