Galatasaray’s veteran Uruguayan goalkeeper and long-time captain, Fernando Muslera, announced that he will play his final match for the club against Basaksehir. Speaking at a press conference attended by club president Dursun Ozbek, Muslera expressed deep emotions as he officially said goodbye to the club where he spent 14 years.

“This chapter of my career as a player is coming to an end, but I will remain a part of Galatasaray for the rest of my life,” Muslera said through tears. “Galatasaray will always be a part of me.”

14 years, 19 trophies, and a heartfelt goodbye

Having joined the club in 2011, Muslera won 19 trophies and became one of the most iconic foreign players in the club’s history. “Basaksehir will be my last game. Spending 14 years at the same club and winning so many trophies is something very few people experience,” he noted.

'Türkiye is my 2nd homeland'

When asked what he would take with him if he could bring something from Türkiye, Muslera answered, “It would be the people and your culture. I am incredibly proud of the love I received here, completely unconditionally. That’s why I wear a tattoo of it on my arm. I will return every year. We will see each other again every year.”

“I am leaving Galatasaray with unforgettable memories. I will never forget our fans. I’ll be in a place close to my family and homeland. Türkiye is my second country,” he said.

Club president Dursun Ozbek stated that Muslera’s involvement with Galatasaray will continue off the pitch. “His role is not over. We are Türkiye’s biggest club, and we have a global vision to promote Galatasaray further. Fernando Muslera will be part of this initiative, particularly in South America, as part of our international Multi Club project.”

'I will keep playing football'

Muslera clarified that he is not retiring from professional football just yet. “I spoke with our president. I will continue playing. I haven’t signed with any club yet. I’ll take my time and decide calmly,” he said.

Reflecting on his happiest moments at the club, Muslera highlighted two key memories: “The day I signed my contract and the day my wife Patricia came into my life. I came here alone. My children were born here. Now I return as a big family.”
