The UEFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed an away supporter ban and a €40,000 (46,468) fine on Galatasaray ahead of the club’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg fixture against Liverpool.
According to a statement released by the Turkish club, the sanctions relate to crowd disturbances that occurred during Galatasaray’s away match against Juventus in the Champions League knockout play-off round in Turin. UEFA’s disciplinary body reviewed official reports from that encounter and determined that incidents involving visiting supporters warranted formal punishment.
The club has responded to UEFA’s decision, announcing that it will appeal the ruling before UEFA’s Court of Arbitration.
The disciplinary measures stem from events during the match in Turin, where visiting supporters were reported to have been involved in crowd disturbances. After evaluating match delegate and security reports, UEFA concluded that Galatasaray had breached its safety and security obligations under competition regulations.
As a result, the club has been ordered to play its next away European match without traveling supporters. In addition to the supporter ban, a financial penalty of €40,000 has been imposed.
Galatasaray are scheduled to host Liverpool in the first leg of the Round of 16 tie in Istanbul on March 10 before traveling to England for the decisive return leg on March 18. The away supporter ban means that Galatasaray fans will not be permitted to attend the fixture at Anfield.
