Real Madrid's appeal against a four-match suspension handed to Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior has been rejected by the Spanish Football Federation's Appeals Committee, leaving the player set to miss the highly anticipated El Clasico against Barcelona on Oct. 25.
The Spanish club had challenged the suspension following Vinicius' red card during last week's LaLiga match against Villarreal, but the committee upheld the original decision.
According to The Athletic, Real Madrid will take the case to Spain's Administrative Sports Court in a further attempt to overturn the punishment.
Under the current suspension, Vinicius will miss four matches, including the El Clasico against Barcelona at Camp Nou on Oct. 25.
The Brazilian international is also set to sit out Real Madrid's fixtures against Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valencia unless the club succeeds in overturning the decision through its next appeal.
The suspension stems from an incident during Real Madrid's LaLiga encounter with Villarreal last week, when Vinicius started on the bench before coming on in the second half.
The Brazilian was shown a red card for pulling an opponent's hair in the build-up to a goal, which was subsequently ruled out following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The decision left Real Madrid playing with 10 men, while Villarreal went on to secure a 1-0 victory.
With the initial appeal now rejected, Real Madrid's next legal challenge will determine whether Vinicius can return in time for the upcoming fixtures.
