Romania’s national team head coach Mircea Lucescu has been taken to the hospital after falling ill during a training camp session, the Romania Football Federation said on Sunday.
The incident happened as the team prepared for a match against Slovakia, with the 80-year-old coach becoming unwell during a technical meeting before the final training session.
The federation said Lucescu’s condition is currently stable but confirmed that he was transferred to a hospital in the capital as a precaution.
"As of now, the head coach’s condition is stable. However, in line with medical protocols and to eliminate any risk, Mircea Lucescu has been transferred to a hospital in the capital for detailed examinations and specialist monitoring," the statement read.
No further details were given about the nature of the illness.
Mircea Lucescu is one of the most experienced and widely traveled coaches in European football, known for his long managerial career across Eastern Europe and Türkiye.
He has coached clubs including Shakhtar Donetsk, Dynamo Kyiv, Besiktas, Galatasaray, and Inter Milan and won the 2009 UEFA Cup with Shakhtar.
Known for working with young players and adapting his tactics, Lucescu also managed the Türkiye national team from 2017 to 2019.
Lucescu recently led Romania in the 2026 FIFA World Cup European qualifying playoff semifinal, where the team lost 1-0 to Türkiye.
