Gheorghe Hagi is expected to take over as Romania national team coach after Mircea Lucescu's departure, with Romanian media reporting that contract terms have already started to come into view.

The proposed deal would put Hagi on the same salary as Lucescu, while tying larger rewards to qualification for major international tournaments.

A familiar figure moves closer to Romania's job

Romania is expected to turn to Hagi for the national team role following its split with Lucescu. Reports in the Romanian press said Romanian Football Federation President Razvan Burleanu met with Hagi and reached an understanding with the veteran coach on the details of a contract.

According to Fanatik in Romania, Hagi would earn the same salary as Lucescu under the planned deal. His reported monthly pay would stand at €27,000, which would amount to €324,000 over a full year.

Bonus structure puts the focus on results

Beyond the base salary, the reported contract would place strong emphasis on performance-based rewards. The deal is said to include a €300,000 bonus if Romania qualifies for UEFA Euro 2028, the European Championship for national teams.

If Romania goes on to qualify for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Hagi would reportedly receive a €500,000 bonus. The Romanian media report drew attention to the fact that those bonus payments would exceed his annual salary.

Once the official contract is signed, Hagi is expected to step into the role immediately. His first test would then come in a friendly match against Georgia in Tbilisi on June 2.
