Gymnastics champion Simone Biles disclosed a recent medical emergency on Saturday via an Instagram story, describing it as one of the most frightening experiences of her life, without providing details about the nature of the incident.
Biles, 29, shared a photo of her wrist bearing multiple hospital bracelets and wrote, 'I'm not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today's age, but almost dying wasn't on my bingo card earlier this week.'
She noted the experience was made more difficult by the absence of her husband, Jonathan Owens, who was away for off-season training with his NFL team, the Indianapolis Colts. 'This was one of, if not the scariest experiences of my life,' Biles wrote.
The gymnast added that she had spent the week resting in bed and thanked those in her inner circle who reached out, visited, or sent flowers, saying she would share more details at a later time.
Biles is a seven-time Olympic champion. Three of her gold medals came at the 2024 Paris Games, where she returned to Olympic competition following a mental health break.
She had previously withdrawn from several events at the Tokyo 2021 Games after experiencing the 'twisties'—a mental block linked to stress or anxiety—despite arriving as a favorite, having won four golds at the 2016 Rio Games.
In February, Biles attended the Milan Winter Olympics, where she consoled US figure skater Ilia Malinin after he failed to reach medal contention.
