Spain defeated England 3-2 at Wembley Stadium in London to open the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League group stage, one of 10 results across League A, League B and League C that will shape promotion and relegation battles through November.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal for Spain in the second half, repeating a role he played in the UEFA Euro 2024 final, where he also scored the decisive goal against England.
The result extended Spain's recent record against England, a fixture the two sides have played 28 times, with England holding 14 wins, three draws and 11 losses overall heading into the match.
In the same League A group, Croatia beat Czechia 2-1 in Prague, with Luka Modric contributing to the win.
In League B's Group 1, Slovenia and Scotland drew 0-0, while Switzerland defeated North Macedonia 3-0.
League C produced the widest margins of the round. In Group 1, Finland defeated San Marino, a microstate bordered entirely by Italy, 7-0, with Joel Pohjanpalo scoring a hat-trick.
Albania beat Belarus 2-0 in the same group. In Group 3, the Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan drew 1-1, while Slovakia beat Moldova 2-0. In Group 4, Iceland and Estonia drew 1-1, and Luxembourg beat Bulgaria 2-1.
The UEFA Nations League divides 54 national teams into four leagues based on their ranking in the previous edition.
League A, B and C each contain 16 teams split into four groups of four, with each team playing six matches between September and November.
Group winners in League B and League C are promoted, while the bottom-placed team in each League A and League B group is relegated.
The competition's league phase runs through November 17, after which League A group winners advance to the quarterfinals in March 2027, ahead of the Nations League Finals in June 2027.
Portugal is the defending champion, having won the 2025 finals against Spain on penalties.
In League D, Azerbaijan and Lithuania are scheduled to meet later on Sept. 27.
