Trabzonspor defeated Galatasaray 2-1 at home in Week 28 of the Trendyol Super Lig, ending an 882-day winless streak against Türkiye’s traditional “big three” rivals and dealing a major blow to the visitors' title aspirations.
The Black Sea side had not beaten any of Türkiye’s “big three” rivals, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, or Besiktas, since Nov. 4, 2023, when they secured a 3-2 away victory over Fenerbahce.
Since that victory, Trabzonspor endured a difficult run of 13 league matches without a win against these opponents, recording three draws and 10 losses. This victory over Galatasaray finally ended that drought, marking a significant turnaround in the club's high-profile fixtures.
In earlier encounters, the team lost 1-0 away to Fenerbahce, drew 0-0 away with Galatasaray and shared a 3-3 draw at home with Besiktas. It also suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Fenerbahce before finally securing a breakthrough with the 2-1 win over Galatasaray.
Under head coach Fatih Tekke, the win marked the team’s first success in a major match.
Before this result, Trabzonspor had played eight high-level games under Tekke, six in the league and one each in the Turkish Cup and Super Cup, without a victory, recording six losses and two draws. The Galatasaray win, therefore, represented a key milestone in his tenure.
The match was also notable as Trabzonspor’s first win against Galatasaray under Tekke in their fifth meeting.
Trabzonspor had failed to win in their previous four official encounters, registering one draw and three losses. This poor run included critical defeats in both the Turkish Cup final and the Super Cup semifinal.
