Turkish national tennis player Zeynep Sonmez advanced to the quarterfinals of the Merida Open after defeating third seed Ann Li in the second round of the WTA 500 tournament in Merida, Mexico.

Ranked world No. 81, the 23-year-old faced world No. 39 Ann Li in the second round of the WTA 500 tournament in Merida. Sonmez received a wild-card entry into the main draw.

Li won the opening set 6-3. Sonmez fell 4-2 behind in the second set but forced a tie break and won it 7-6 to level the match.

She then claimed the final set 6-4 to secure a 2-1 victory and move into the last eight. Li had received a first-round bye as the third seed.
