Türkiye concluded the Virtus World Indoor Athletics Championships in Ourense, Spain, with a total of 18 medals, 6 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze, according to the Turkish Special Athletes Sports Federation.
The women’s team was among the standout performers of the competition. Aysel Onder, Fatma Damla Altin, Esra Bayrak, Ebrar Keskin, and Reyhan Tasdelen secured the overall team gold medal, a historic achievement for Turkish para athletics, according to federation officials.
Aysel Onder set a European record in the T20 200m, winning gold in 24.87 seconds, and also earned silver in the T20 60m with a time of 7.87 seconds.
Earlier in the championships, Onder, Altin, Bayrak, and Tasdelen won gold in the women’s 4x200-meter T20 relay with a time of 1:52.35.
Mehmet Emin Egilmez won gold in the 800m, marking Türkiye’s first victory in that event.
In the T20 category long jump, Tasdelen won silver with a leap of 5.19 meters, Altin took bronze at 5.15 meters, and Bayrak placed fifth with 5.04 meters.
In shot put, Muhammet Atici earned silver in the men’s event with a throw of 16.84 meters, and Keskin won bronze in the women’s event with 13.71 meters.
Turkish Special Athletes Sports Federation President Birol Aydin stated that the medal tally reflects the athletes’ determination and discipline. “The 18 medals won at the VIRTUS Para Athletics World Indoor Championships are the finest result of the perseverance, belief, and disciplined effort of our special athletes,” Aydin said. He added that he was proud of every competitor who represented Türkiye on the world stage.
Aydin also noted that the women’s team dedicated their gold medal and championship trophy to Turkish women on International Women’s Day, and congratulated the team on their achievement.
