Following the recent confirmation of the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, motorsport authorities in Türkiye have expressed readiness to host a Grand Prix if any scheduled races are canceled, reportedly preparing to sign a five-year, €60 million deal to bring Formula 1 back to Istanbul.
The Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED) announced that Istanbul is prepared to step in if a race is dropped from the current lineup.
Türkiye is willing to secure a long-term deal for the return of Formula 1 to Istanbul Park, offering to pay €60 million annually for a minimum contract of five seasons, according to a report in Spanish media.
TOSFED, which now manages Istanbul Park, is seeking not just a one-off return but a permanent place on the F1 calendar. Türkiye previously hosted Formula 1 races at the circuit in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic, stepping in to fill gaps caused by global travel restrictions.
Eren Uclertopragi, president of TOSFED, said the federation has been engaged in discussions with Formula 1 management and the International Automobile Federation (FIA) since its recent appointment by the Turkish government. He confirmed strong state-level backing for a long-term agreement.
“There is a strong commitment from the government to bring Türkiye back into the Formula 1 calendar with a permanent and long-term agreement,” Uclertopragi said.
While circuits such as Imola are also competing to remain on the schedule, Uclertopragi emphasized that Türkiye is not seeking to compete but instead relies on its strategic location, strong automotive industry, and growing fan base.
Although no current slot is available, opportunities could arise as early as 2027. The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort is expected to exit the calendar by then, and the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona has yet to secure a contract beyond 2026.
Meanwhile, competition is intensifying. Thailand has announced plans to enter the Formula 1 circuit, with the government pledging $1.2 billion to host a street race in Bangkok starting in 2028.
