The 12th Lake Van Water Sports Festival has opened on the shores of Lake Van in eastern Türkiye, an event organized to promote the lake for tourism.
Divers unfurled a Turkish flag underwater during the opening ceremony at the Edremit-Gebze Water Sports Center.
The festival was organized jointly by the Van Governorate, Van Metropolitan Municipality and the Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports.
Activities included beach handball and beach volleyball competitions, along with flyboard, canoe, swimming, rowing, dragon boat and sailing demonstrations.
A water obstacle course, face painting and tug-of-war events were also held. The festival drew particular interest from children and young people, who also took part in mind games competitions.
Youth and Sports Provincial Director Mehmet Tosun said the festival aimed to contribute to the promotion of the city and to give participants a memorable experience.
He noted that Van, which has hosted civilizations for thousands of years, is known for its natural, historical and cultural heritage as well as its potential for water sports.
Lake Van, described as the world's largest soda lake, is considered one of the region's most significant natural landmarks.
