Sergen Yalcin, one of the most recognizable figures in Turkish football, has become the 48th head coach of Türkiye's national team, taking on the role after a career that has seen him represent the country's biggest clubs and win major domestic trophies as a manager.
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced his appointment Tuesday, confirming that the former Besiktas star had signed a four-year contract to replace Italian coach Vincenzo Montella.
Yalcin, who represented Türkiye at two European Championships during his playing career, becomes the 27th Turkish manager to lead the national side in its 103-year history.
Sergen Yalcin established himself as a prominent figure in Turkish football during his years at Besiktas, where he spent most of his playing career and became a fan favorite.
His career also took him to several of the country's other leading clubs, including Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, and Trabzonspor, giving him experience across Türkiye's most prominent football institutions.
Beyond his club career, Yalcin represented Türkiye internationally, earning 37 caps, or national team appearances, and scoring five goals.
He was part of the Turkish squads that competed at UEFA EURO 1996 and EURO 2000, two tournaments that marked important stages in the national team's development.
After moving into management, Yalcin worked with several Turkish clubs, gradually building up his coaching experience across the country's top football divisions.
His managerial career has included Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskisehirspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor, Yeni Malatyaspor and Antalyaspor.
However, his most significant achievements came at Besiktas, the club most closely associated with his playing career.
During his time in charge, Yalcin guided Besiktas to both the Turkish Super Lig championship and the Turkish Cup, securing the country's top domestic league title and its principal knockout trophy.
Those achievements added to his long-standing connection with the Istanbul club, where he had already established himself as a popular player.
Yalcin's appointment places him alongside several Turkish managers who have overseen major achievements with the national team.
Fatih Terim holds the records for both matches managed and victories, having led Türkiye in 135 games across four spells between 1990 and 2017, recording 70 wins.
Under Terim, Türkiye reached its first European Championship finals in 1996 before advancing to the semifinals at EURO 2008.
Mustafa Denizli subsequently guided the team to the EURO 2000 quarterfinals, while Senol Gunes led Türkiye to third place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, ending a 48-year absence from the competition. Gunes also oversaw a third-place finish at the FIFA Confederations Cup.
Across its history, Türkiye has played 658 matches under 47 coaches before Yalcin's appointment, with both domestic and foreign managers contributing to the national team's development.
Yalcin takes charge following the departure of Vincenzo Montella, whose tenure began in 2023 with an away victory over Croatia and included a quarterfinal appearance at EURO 2024.
Montella also guided Türkiye to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and promotion to the top tier of the UEFA Nations League.
However, a group-stage exit at the World Cup and four consecutive defeats in Nations League A brought his tenure to an end.
With his appointment, Yalcin returns to the international stage in a different capacity, moving from a former national team player to the head coach responsible for leading Türkiye over the next four years.
