Zeynep Sonmez, Türkiye's top-ranked tennis player, advanced to the second round of the Canadian Open on Monday, defeating Canada's Rebecca Marino in straight sets.
Sonmez, ranked 81st in the world, defeated the 118th-ranked Marino 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 34 minutes at the WTA 1000-level tournament, held at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, Canada's largest city.
Sonmez will next face American player Elvina Kalieva in the second round.
Sonmez, born in Istanbul in 2002, became the highest-ranked Turkish player in WTA history earlier this year after breaking into the world's top 50 for the first time, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 48. She is the second Turkish woman to crack the WTA's top 100, following Cagla Buyukakcay.
Sonmez won her first WTA Tour title at the 2024 Merida Open, defeating Ann Li in the final, and has since built a reputation for her steady progress on hard courts. She reached the third round at Wimbledon in 2025, marking the first time a Turkish player advanced that far at a Grand Slam in the Open Era, and has also represented Türkiye in the Billie Jean King Cup.
