In a landmark move to enhance Türkiye's maritime strength, the Turkish navy is set to welcome its first Reis-class submarine – the TCG Piri Reis.
This development marks a significant boost to the nation's underwater capabilities and represents a key milestone in its defense strategy.
On August 24, 2024, a major ceremony will take place at Aksaz Shipyard Command, attended by the President, to mark the commissioning of the TCG Piri Reis. This ceremony will also feature the flag-raising for the Hizirreis submarine, signaling the start of its sea trials, while the Muratreis submarine will begin its fitting-out process, further strengthening the fleet.
The REİS-class submarines, based on the German Type 214 design, are being constructed at the Gölcük Shipyard in Türkiye. Equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, these submarines can conduct prolonged underwater operations without surfacing, thanks to a combination of diesel engines, batteries, and fuel cells.
Türkiye plans to commission one submarine each year, with all six REİS-class submarines expected to be operational by 2028.
These submarines are set to play a crucial role in Türkiye's naval strategy, enhancing regional deterrence and laying the groundwork for future domestic submarine projects, contributing to the growth of the national defense industry.
