A memorial ceremony was held on the banks of the Meric River in Edirne to honor the Roma people killed at Nazi Germany's Auschwitz camp on Aug. 2, 1944.

The event, organized by the Edirne City Council's Roma Working Group, brought participants together along the riverbank to mark the anniversary of the killings.

Group spokesperson Turan Salli said Nazi Germany's fascist policies and its harsh treatment of the Roma people had resulted in systematic deaths.

He said Hitler established numerous concentration camps across the countries he occupied and systematically killed Roma people, including children, noting that on August 2, 1944, an estimated 3,000 Roma were killed in gas chambers or shot at the camps.

Calls for protection of human rights

Salli said it is estimated that thousands of Roma were killed in Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945.

He noted that Germany did not formally acknowledge the genocide against the Roma for decades, only recognizing it in 1982 after documents and records were presented.

He called for the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms worldwide, saying people should never be killed for ethnic, religious, or linguistic reasons, and expressed hope that such crimes against humanity would never be repeated.

Following the remarks, Salli and other participants laid flowers in the Meric River in memory of those who were killed.
