A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan's Iwate Prefecture, with no tsunami warning issued after the tremor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake was recorded offshore, east of the Noda area, placing the center of the tremor in the Pacific waters off northeastern Japan.

Quake centered east of Noda

The USGS, which tracks seismic activity, reported that the epicenter was located 55 kilometers east of Noda in Iwate Prefecture.

The quake had a depth of 37.2 kilometers, meaning the seismic activity occurred well below the seabed rather than near the surface.

No tsunami warning follows tremor

Following the earthquake, no tsunami warning was issued.

Initial reports indicated no immediate details on damage or casualties.
