The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C., underwent a cleanup operation on Tuesday, after algae built up along the bottom of the pool, prompting maintenance work at one of the most recognizable landmarks on the National Mall.
The reflecting pool, a long, shallow pool designed to mirror the monuments around it, had recently been repainted and continues to undergo periodic maintenance because of algae buildup and other environmental factors.
Algae, a plant-like growth that can spread in water, had gathered along the bottom of the pool before the latest cleanup was carried out.
Located in the heart of Washington D.C., the reflecting pool is one of the most visited landmarks on the National Mall, the central park-like area that brings together several of the U.S. capital's major memorials and monuments.
The latest cleanup was aimed at preserving the visual condition of the pool and maintaining the setting around the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
