Azerbaijan summoned Russia’s ambassador to Baku over what it described as a series of provocative, insulting and threatening statements targeting Azerbaijan, its people and the country’s leadership in Russian media and information platforms, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.

Russian Ambassador Mikhail Yevdokimov was called to the Foreign Ministry, where Azerbaijani officials conveyed what they described as serious concern and strong protest over the recent rhetoric.

The ministry said particular attention was drawn to statements made against Azerbaijan, its people and its leadership in an Aug. 13 broadcast of the “Chistota Ponimaniya” project.

Azerbaijan cites series of Russian media broadcasts

Azerbaijani officials also raised remarks made during an Aug. 7 program on Sputnik radio concerning the inclusion of Azerbaijan’s leadership on what was described as Russia’s “list of terrorists and extremists.”

The ministry called those claims “absurd.”

Officials also cited material published on YouTube on Aug. 9 and another broadcast on Russia’s Spas television channel on Aug. 16, saying both contained insulting material and provocative statements directed at Azerbaijan’s leadership.

The Foreign Ministry said it was unacceptable to discuss possible interference in Azerbaijan’s domestic political processes or to make calls involving physical violence against the Azerbaijani people or the country’s leadership.

Baku demands action to halt threats and violent rhetoric

Azerbaijan told the Russian ambassador that it had repeatedly called for such activities to be stopped and that the issue had already been discussed at various political levels.

Despite those appeals, the ministry said similar rhetoric had continued and had become even harsher, which it described as a source of serious concern.

During the meeting, Azerbaijani officials reiterated their expectation that Russia take urgent and effective measures to end what Baku called provocative, threatening and violent rhetoric against Azerbaijan in the Russian media and information space.
