Erdogan congratulates new UK PM Burnham, pledges deeper ties

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by phone Monday with newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, congratulating him on his new role and discussing bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments.

According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, Erdogan said he believed relations between Türkiye and the U.K. would advance further in the coming period.

The two leaders also discussed cooperation in defense, trade and investment.

Erdogan highlights defense cooperation

Erdogan said Türkiye and the U.K. had made significant progress in cooperation across a wide range of areas, particularly in the defense industry.

He highlighted the importance of the Strategic Partnership Framework Document and the Security and Defense Partnership Document signed by the two countries.

The agreements form part of ongoing cooperation between Ankara and London, according to the Communications Directorate.

Türkiye, UK to pursue trade and investment targets

Erdogan also said Türkiye and the U.K. would continue working together to increase bilateral trade volume and achieve their investment targets.

The phone call also covered regional and global developments, though the Communications Directorate did not provide further details on those discussions.

Erdogan told Burnham that he expected Türkiye-U.K. relations to reach a higher level during the new British prime minister’s tenure.
