Eight more children died of suspected measles in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, raising the outbreak's overall death toll to 779, health officials said.
The latest fatalities among children showing symptoms of measles were reported by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a department under Bangladesh's Ministry of Health, according to The Dhaka Tribune.
With the new deaths, the number of suspected measles-related fatalities climbed to 684, while laboratory-confirmed measles deaths stood at 95, the DGHS said.
An additional 974 suspected measles cases were recorded in the same 24-hour period, bringing the nationwide total to 115,138.
The Bangladeshi government launched an emergency vaccination campaign on April 7 after a sharp rise in child deaths linked to suspected measles.
Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, can lead to complications including pneumonia and encephalopathy. It remains one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths among children worldwide.
Health authorities have not indicated when the outbreak is expected to be brought under control, as case numbers and fatalities continue to climb across the country.
