Italy asked the European Union to impose sanctions on Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his treatment of detained Gaza flotilla activists.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday he had formally asked Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, to place sanctions against Ben-Gvir on the agenda of the next meeting of EU foreign ministers.
The request followed a video posted by Ben-Gvir showing detained activists from a Gaza-bound flotilla kneeling with their hands tied and foreheads on the ground.
Tajani said on the U.S. social media platform X that the request was made because of “the unacceptable acts committed against the flotilla.”
He said the activists were seized in international waters and subjected to “harassment and humiliation.”
Tajani said the treatment violated “the most basic human rights.”
Tajani said he asked Kallas to include the adoption of sanctions against Ben-Gvir at the next EU foreign ministers’ meeting.
The request concerns Ben-Gvir’s treatment of Global Sumud Flotilla activists after they were detained while sailing toward Gaza.
The flotilla had been attempting to reach the Gaza Strip when its activists were seized in international waters, according to Tajani’s statement.
