Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing's "unshakeable" commitment to resolving the Taiwan question while vowing to modernize China's military. He also pledged to continue the fight against corruption within the ruling Communist Party.
Xi made the remarks on Wednesday at a ceremony marking the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, addressing political and military leaders and party members gathered at the Great Hall of the People.
"Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China's complete reunification is a historic mission and an unshakable commitment for the Communist Party of China," Xi was quoted as saying by Xinhua News.
Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, vowed to take "resolute actions" against secessionists seeking "Taiwan independence," oppose external interference and advance national reunification.
China considers Taiwan its breakaway province, while Taipei insists on its independence.
Xi underscored the importance of a "strong military" and said China must advance the modernization of national defense and the armed forces.
"We must advance the modernization of national defense and the armed forces," Xi told party members.
He also stressed the need to uphold the absolute leadership of the Communist Party over the people's armed forces.
Xi called for efforts to "resolutely" safeguard China's sovereignty, security and development interests.
The remarks came as analysts have questioned the ability of China's armed forces to fight effectively after Xi's sweeping anti-graft campaign removed several senior figures from the military's top ranks.
Xi's years-long campaign against corruption has brought down two defense ministers in the past three years and reduced the once seven-member Central Military Commission, China's top military body, to just himself and one other general.
The Central Military Commission, which Xi heads, published new measures in May that would "establish iron rules for strict education, strict management, and strict supervision" of senior military cadres, state media reported.
Xi said the party must "resolutely wage the critical, protracted, and comprehensive battle against corruption."
Xi said promoting long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao is essential for realizing national rejuvenation.
He also urged China to oppose interference by external forces, without naming any specific countries.
"Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing the complete unification of the motherland is an unswerving historical mission of our party and the shared aspiration of all Chinese people," Xi said.
The Communist Party of China was founded on July 1, 1921.
It had more than 101 million members as of late 2025, according to state news agency Xinhua.
