Canadian authorities reported fatalities and injuries after an explosion and major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, with strong winds carrying flames beyond the military facility and emergency crews rushing to contain the blaze.

Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed the casualties late Saturday but provided no figures or details about what triggered the incident. "I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," McGuinty said.

The situation remains active, and authorities have withheld further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether weapons or ammunition were involved.

Police investigate as emergency response expands

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is investigating, while the Canadian Armed Forces and federal, provincial and municipal authorities are coordinating their response, McGuinty told reporters.

Prime Minister Mark Carney had earlier described the incident as serious, confirming that it had sparked a major fire at the base.

"Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected," Carney wrote on Facebook, adding that federal authorities were working closely with provincial and local officials.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also described the blaze as "significant and tragic," noting that it had affected many military personnel.

Canadian lawmaker Dane Lloyd had earlier reported hearing of "significant casualties" following the explosion and fire.

Strong winds spread fire beyond base

The Municipal District of Wainwright reported that strong winds had pushed the flames beyond the base perimeter, prompting emergency crews from multiple jurisdictions to respond.

Local authorities had not issued evacuation orders but urged residents to stay away from the area and leave roads clear for emergency vehicles.

The nearby community of Wainwright was providing hospital and firefighting assistance, McGuinty added, as authorities continued to monitor the fire.

"I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory," he said, promising further updates as information became available.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is located about 200 kilometers (124 miles) southeast of Edmonton and ranks among Canada's busiest military training facilities.
