U.S. President Donald Trump said Denmark has been unable to protect Greenland from what he described as a Russian threat, adding that “the time has come” for action.

In a social media post, Trump claimed NATO had warned Denmark for 20 years to safeguard Greenland against Russia, alleging Copenhagen failed to do so.

US cites national security need for Greenland

Trump has repeatedly said the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons, calling it vital for what he described as the construction of a “Golden Dome.”

Following talks in Washington between U.S., Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers, officials said fundamental disagreements persist and that Washington’s desire to acquire Greenland remains clear.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has previously rejected approaches from the U.S. that included the transfer of sovereignty.

Tariff threats and military cooperation

Denmark has recently called for increased military cooperation in the region, with several European countries announcing plans to deploy small military units and officers to Greenland.

Trump later warned that world peace was at risk in the Greenland debate and announced plans to impose tariffs on countries opposing the U.S. acquisition of the island, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands and Finland.

He said a 10% tariff would take effect on Feb. 1, 2026, rising to 25% after June 1, 2026, and would remain in place until an agreement is reached for the full and complete purchase of Greenland.
