French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced on Tuesday that France is considering deploying troops to Greenland, following U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial remarks about acquiring the Arctic island.
While France has discussed the issue with Denmark, Barrot clarified that there are no immediate plans for action, noting that "at this point, it is not Denmark’s wish." He emphasized that Europe would act if its security interests were threatened.
Meanwhile, Danish PM Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday said she received very strong support from Europe as she sought backing to counter Trump's threats to take over Greenland.
Trump has expressed growing interest in Greenland's natural resources and strategic value, sparking concern across Europe. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has been engaging with European leaders to address the issue, underscoring the importance of transatlantic cooperation and downplaying immediate military threats.
Denmark recently announced a €2 billion ($2 billion) investment in Arctic defense, as tensions around the region continue to rise.
