More than a hundred people protested in front of Houston City Hall and marched downtown over the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on July 11th.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old man, was shot by an ICE agent on Tuesday morning.
Federal authorities said Salgado Araujo was an undocumented Mexican national who was not in the country legally.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Salgado Araujo rammed an ICE vehicle and that an officer opened fire in self-defense.
In contrast, locals and his family said he lived in the U.S. for decades and was shot as he drove his construction crew to a Houston job site.
Salgado Araujo's family said he was very close to obtaining legal status in the U.S. after living in the country for 35 years. He may have been scared that the people in the unmarked vehicle were going to steal his tools, Araujo’s son said.
This is the second protest after Araujo’s death, with demonstrators calling for an end to such immigration enforcement operations in Houston.
Since last year, 21 people have been shot by ICE officers, and five of them lost their lives.
His family said, “We grieve with Lorenzo's family and demand the truth. We call for a full, independent investigation, the release of all available evidence, and real accountability.”
Araujo was a father of three and a business owner. He had been living in the country for over thirty years and had no criminal record.
FIEL Houston, an immigrant-led civil rights organization, encouraged people to join the march, stating: “We cannot allow fear or division to silence us. We must stand united in demanding transparency, accountability, and answers about the events that led to Lorenzo’s death.”
DHS said it would not release the name of the officer who shot Salgado Araujo.
