Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar won reelection in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections, defeating Republican challenger John Nagel by a wide margin and securing a fifth term in the House of Representatives.
According to unofficial results, Omar received about 77% of the vote, while Nagel had roughly 16%, giving the incumbent a lead of about 61 percentage points.
The Associated Press called the race for Omar, while CBS News and the Minnesota Star Tribune also reported her victory.
Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th District, which includes Minneapolis and surrounding communities, since 2019.
She was among the first two Muslim women elected to the U.S. Congress and became the first Somali American to serve in Congress.
Omar, who was born in Somalia, has frequently been criticized by U.S. President Donald Trump and is under a federal investigation by the Trump administration over her immigration history.
She has rejected the allegations and said the investigation is politically motivated.
Her latest victory allows her to retain her House seat and begin a fifth term in Congress.
