Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday that India and the Greek Cypriot administration (GCA) had elevated their ties to a strategic partnership, signing six agreements and memoranda of understanding covering defense, cybersecurity, counterterrorism, higher education, culture, and trade.

Modi said investment from GCA into India had nearly doubled over the past decade, which he described as a sign of growing mutual trust.

"The friendship with Greek Cyprus is both strong and forward-looking," Modi said at a joint press conference following his meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, according to Ani News.

Defense roadmap, cyber dialogue

The two countries announced a Defense Cooperation Roadmap for 2026-2031, aimed at enhancing defense activities, advancing national security, and identifying areas for joint training and exercises.

A cybersecurity dialogue was also established between India and GCA.

The countries signed a technical arrangement for official coordination on search and rescue matters between the Larnaca Joint Rescue Coordination Center of Greek Cyprus and India's Ministry of Defense.

Modi said the two sides had also decided to expand cooperation in cybersecurity, maritime security and counterterrorism. "We have decided to expand cooperation in the areas of cybersecurity, maritime security and counterterrorism," Modi noted.

Six agreements signed

The six agreements and memoranda signed during the visit cover a joint working group on counterterrorism, diplomatic training cooperation between India's Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and GCA's Diplomatic Academy, innovation and technology cooperation between the two countries' relevant ministries, higher education and research collaboration, cultural cooperation for 2026-2030, and the search and rescue technical arrangement.

A consular dialogue between the two countries was also established.

GCA will open a trade center in Mumbai, which Ani News said would boost Indian exports, create jobs, and deepen trade and economic ties.

India gifted GCA a Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri (BHISM) Cube, a portable medical unit containing medicines and equipment for frontline care in injuries and disasters, as part of the BHISM.

GCA also joined India's Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative under the pillar of trade, connectivity and maritime transport, Ani News reported.
