Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sunday that confidence in BRICS among Global South countries has increased as global tensions, climate disasters and supply chain disruptions highlight the need for greater resilience and cooperation.
Speaking at an expanded session on the second day of the BRICS Leaders Summit in New Delhi, Modi said the bloc had worked to promote inclusive global growth and argued that solutions developed within BRICS should also benefit countries outside the group.
“We believe that the benefits of developed solutions in the BRICS should not only be limited to the BRICS. They should be made adaptable and accessible according to the needs of the Global South,” Modi said.
Modi said rising global tensions and recent crises had shown that problems could not remain confined to individual regions.
“The pandemic, climate disaster, and supply chain disruption have shown that in today’s interconnected world, no crisis is limited to one area,” he said. “That is why we have focused on increasing resilience in all areas.”
“The confidence of the countries of the Global South has increased in the BRICS,” Modi added.
He said countries from the Global South see their voices heard and experiences respected within the bloc, with solutions developed together rather than simply for them.
Addressing a session focused on “resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability,” Modi said BRICS draws strength from its diversity and cooperation.
“We may be rooted in different realities, but together we rise through cooperation and blossom for humanity,” he said.
Modi added that the bloc’s diversity, identity, cooperation and progress should benefit humanity as a whole.
He said the number of countries taking part in the summit demonstrated BRICS’ “increasing power, attraction, and unparalleled faith.”
The annual summit, which began Saturday, includes BRICS members and partner countries. The Chinese, Russian and Iranian presidents are among the leaders attending.
The meeting comes as the U.S.-Iran war has continued for around seven months and the Russia-Ukraine war for more than four years.
