Iran's foreign minister accused Israel on Friday of undermining diplomatic progress with the United States over Tehran's nuclear program, saying the two countries were close to reaching a "promising agreement" before Israeli strikes began.

Speaking to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called Israel's military campaign an "outrageous act of aggression" that derailed ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving disputes over Iran's nuclear activities.

The diplomatic process had advanced to the point where Araghchi was scheduled to meet with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Oman on June 15. However, the meeting was canceled after Israel launched its military operation days earlier.

"We were supposed to meet with the Americans on 15 June to craft a very promising agreement for peaceful resolution of the issues fabricated over our peaceful nuclear programme," Araghchi said in his first international appearance since the strikes began.

Israel cites nuclear weapons prevention as military objective

Israel initiated its campaign Friday, stating the operation sought to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons capability. Iran has consistently denied pursuing nuclear weapons.

Araghchi characterized the Israeli military action as an "unjust war imposed on my people" and warned of radiation risks from strikes targeting atomic facilities. He described attacks on nuclear installations as "grave war crimes."

Casualties mount as both sides exchange fire

The exchange of fire has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Iran reported Sunday that Israeli strikes killed at least 224 people, including military commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians. The country has not updated its casualty figures since that announcement.

Israeli government sources report at least 24 deaths and hundreds wounded from retaliatory Iranian strikes on Israeli territory.

Iran appeals to international community for intervention

"It was a betrayal of diplomacy and unprecedented blow to the foundations of international law," the foreign minister told the Geneva assembly.

The Iranian official called on the international community to uphold legal principles, saying "Iran rightfully expects each and everyone of you to stand for justice and rule of law."

Araghchi's appearance at the UN Human Rights Council preceded scheduled meetings with European foreign ministers as diplomatic efforts continue amid the escalating conflict.
