Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Israel’s interference in Somalia’s sovereignty is unacceptable and constitutes a clear violation of international law.
Mohamud made the remarks while speaking at the Al Jazeera Forum held in Qatar’s capital, Doha.
Mohamud said Israel’s intervention in Somalia’s sovereignty threatens both regional and global stability, stressing that such actions violate international law.
He referred to Israel’s decision in December to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, saying the move targets Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and challenges the unity of the African continent.
“Israel’s interference in Somalia’s sovereignty is unacceptable,” Mohamud said.
He emphasized that Africa rejects any attempt to change borders through the use of force, calling such approaches unacceptable.
Mohamud also addressed developments in Gaza, saying Israeli attacks have led to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
He said the failure to reach a fair and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue threatens international peace and security, stressing that justice must be ensured on the basis of a two-state solution.
Warning that the international system is undergoing a serious test, Mohamud said allowing the use of force to override the rule of law could push the world into deeper crises. He urged the international community to take a clear and firm stance against violations of international law.
Mohamud added that Somalia remains determined in its fight against terrorism and said security and stability in the Red Sea are vital not only for the region but also for global trade and security.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had announced that Israel recognized Somaliland as an “independent and sovereign state,” making Israel the first country to do so.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized as a sovereign state by the international community.
Somalia considers Somaliland an integral part of the country and maintains that all international agreements concerning the region fall under the authority of the Mogadishu government.
