North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has backed Russia’s actions in Ukraine, claiming U.S. intervention is fueling the conflict. He emphasized North Korea’s unwavering support for Moscow’s defense against “imperialist hegemony,” according to state media.

Key points

  • U.S. blamed for escalation: Kim Jong Un told Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov that Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons is a direct result of U.S. military intervention. He said Russia has the right to defend itself and make hostile forces “pay the price.”
  • Strengthening ties: Kim Jong Un pledged to expand military and strategic cooperation with Russia under a comprehensive partnership agreement with President Vladimir Putin, signed in June.
