Nationalist conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki is leading in Poland’s presidential election runoff with 50.7% of the vote, according to a late Sunday exit poll.
Populist conservative and pro-EU mayor of the Polish capital Rafal Trzaskowski, Nawrocki’s opponent, garnered 49.3%, the Ipsos poll showed. The survey was conducted for broadcasters TVP, Polsat News and TVN.
Voter turnout reached 71.7%, marking a historic high for the country, according to the same poll.
Sylwester Marciniak, chairman of the National Electoral Commission (PKW), said at a news conference that the margin between the two candidates could be as narrow as 120,000 votes, or 0.65%.
He added that the official results may take up to 14 days to be announced.
The runoff followed a first round held May 18, where no candidate received more than 50% of the vote. Turnout in that round was 67.31%.
Trzaskowski, 53, narrowly won the first round with 31.36%, while Nawrocki, 42, followed closely with 29.54%.
The outcome is expected to shape Poland’s political trajectory and its relationship with the European Union.
