Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared NATO is "de facto at war with Russia" through its support for Ukraine, responding to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski's statement that NATO is not fighting Russia.
"NATO provides both indirect and direct support to the Kyiv regime. Therefore, we can say with absolute certainty that NATO is at war with Russia," Peskov told journalists on Monday.
The Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski recently said Russian drones that entered Polish airspace last week were intended to test NATO's response without sparking a full-scale war.
"Interestingly, they were all duds, which suggests to me that Russia tried to test us without starting a war," Sikorski told the U.K. daily The Guardian.
The Russian presidential spokesman emphasized the obviousness of NATO's involvement, stating, "NATO is at war with Russia. This is obvious and does not need any additional proof."
Peskov said NATO is "de facto involved in this war" by providing direct and indirect support to what he called the "Kyiv regime."
His comments came after Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski, while visiting Kyiv, stated that NATO is not at war with Russia. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to Sikorski's remarks about the absence of EU volunteers for war with Russia to defend Ukraine, saying "this should have been admitted earlier."
Peskov stated that neither Kyiv nor European countries are prepared to organize a high-level summit on Ukraine.
"Any high-level contacts must be well prepared so that during such dialogue, developments that need to be made at the expert level in advance can be recorded. But there is no readiness to engage in this, neither from the Kyiv regime nor from the Europeans," Peskov told journalists.
The Kremlin spokesman described calls for an immediate high-level meeting on Ukraine as aimed at achieving an "emotional effect," saying there is no genuine readiness from the Kyiv regime to begin serious discussions.
"A meeting, if it takes place in an unprepared manner, will be absolutely useless," Peskov stated.
Peskov confirmed the Kremlin heard recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Russia and tightening sanctions measures.
"We heard these statements," Peskov told journalists.
"Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don't want them to buy oil, and the sanctions that they're putting on are not tough enough. I'm willing to do sanctions, but they're going to have to toughen up their sanctions commensurate with what I'm doing," Trump told reporters while returning to the White House from Morristown, New Jersey.
In a post on his Truth Social site on Saturday, the U.S. president stated, "I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA."
