The Kremlin said Thursday there is no immediate prospect of resuming peace talks with Ukraine, though it said Russia remains open to negotiations and welcomed Türkiye's continued willingness to help facilitate a settlement.

"We are well aware of our Turkish friends' readiness to continue facilitating a shift toward a peaceful resolution of the situation surrounding Ukraine. We are grateful to the Turkish side for this. At the moment, however, there are no immediate prospects for resuming the negotiation process; we do not see any such signs. Nevertheless, the Russian side certainly remains open to this path," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Peskov's remarks came in response to a question about how the Kremlin assessed prospects for resuming Turkish-mediated peace talks, after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Türkiye retained hope for a ceasefire in Ukraine despite the difficult situation and believed prospects for a settlement remained.

Kremlin on Ukraine's cabinet reshuffle

Peskov said the Kremlin is monitoring a major reshuffle of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's government, but said the naming of a new prime minister and defense minister would make no difference unless Kyiv is willing to make decisions leading to a peace settlement.

Nearly four and a half years into the war, front lines remain largely static, while Russia and Ukraine continue to strike each other's cities, key energy infrastructure and vessels at sea.

Three rounds of peace talks were held in Istanbul, followed by two rounds in Abu Dhabi and one in Geneva at the start of this year, mediated by the United States. Negotiations broke off in February, as Washington became consumed by the war with Iran.

Ukraine has long called for a ceasefire, which Russia has rejected.

Moscow has said it wants a permanent settlement rather than a truce, which it says would give Ukraine a breathing space to regroup.
