Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned Saturday that the “ongoing disintegration” of the transatlantic alliance is a greater threat than external enemies, as NATO faces tensions over the stalled U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

Tusk made the remarks on X hours after Washington announced a decision to withdraw about 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany.

Tusk calls alliance rift ‘disastrous trend’

“The greatest threat to the transatlantic community are not its external enemies, but the ongoing disintegration of our alliance,” Tusk wrote.

“We must all do what it takes to reverse this disastrous trend,” he added.

His comments came amid a growing rift within NATO over the Iran war and U.S. military deployments in Europe.

US to withdraw troops from Germany

Washington announced that it would withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany.

Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration was assessing a possible reduction of the U.S. military presence in Germany.

The remarks followed criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said the U.S. lacked an exit strategy for the Iran war and that Americans were being “humiliated” by the Iranian regime in talks.

Trump criticizes Italy and Spain

Trump also voiced displeasure with Italy and Spain and said he “probably will” pull U.S. forces out of those countries.

He said that when the U.S. “needed them, they were not there,” referring to the war on Iran.

“We have to remember that,” Trump said.
