Qatar's former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani died Sunday morning at the age of 74, the country's Amiri Diwan announced, marking the passing of one of the Gulf state's most prominent former rulers.
The Amiri Diwan, the official administrative office of Qatar's ruling leadership, shared the announcement in a statement on X, the US-based social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
According to the statement, Sheikh Hamad passed away on Sunday morning. The announcement did not provide further details about the circumstances of his death.
The Amiri Diwan also offered a prayer for the former emir, saying: "May God grant him His mercy and forgiveness."
The announcement came directly from Qatar's Amiri Diwan, which serves as one of the country's key official institutions for royal and state communications.
