U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will head a new commission focused on security guarantees for Ukraine, according to a report citing U.S. officials.
News platform Axios reported that Rubio will establish and lead the commission, which will include Ukrainian and European national security officials. The commission's primary mandate will be to address security guarantees that the United States and European countries will provide to Ukraine.
According to the report, Ukrainian and European national security advisers are expected to hold initial discussions in the coming days to formulate an agreement. The report also stated that President Donald Trump will likely provide Ukraine with "U.S. air support" under the umbrella of security guarantees.
The White House has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
The development comes after Trump hosted a high-level meeting at the White House yesterday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
During those discussions, multiple important topics were addressed, including security guarantees that the U.S. and European countries will provide to Ukraine. Trump indicated that Russia also has a positive approach to this issue.
The proposed commission represents a significant step in formalizing Western security commitments to Ukraine as the conflict continues. The involvement of both Ukrainian and European officials suggests a multilateral approach to ensuring Ukraine's long-term security framework.
Details about the commission's timeline, specific mandate, and formal establishment remain unclear pending official White House confirmation.
