Russia will continue its trade and economic cooperation with Türkiye, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump's assertion that Türkiye would stop purchasing Russian oil.
"We continue our trade and economic cooperation with the Republic of Türkiye," Peskov told RIA Novosti news agency, following Trump's Thursday meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washington.
Peskov emphasized that both major gas pipeline projects between Russia and Türkiye remain fully operational.
"TurkStream is operating at full capacity. Blue Stream is operating at full capacity," the Kremlin spokesman stated, referring to the two key natural gas pipelines supplying Russian gas to Türkiye and European markets.
The Russian official emphasized Türkiye's sovereignty in making its own economic decisions, stating that the country would continue to maintain beneficial trade arrangements regardless of external pressure.
"Türkiye is a sovereign state that makes its own decisions about which areas to cooperate with us," Peskov said, adding, "If certain types of trade in certain goods appear profitable to the Turkish side, then the Turkish side will continue to do so."
A Turkish diplomatic source told Russian news agency RIA Novosti on Friday that no changes in Türkiye's policy have been observed following Trump's call to abandon Russian oil, though official statements are still pending.
"No changes or decisions are known at this moment, but it is necessary to wait for statements from officials," the source said.
Trump had expressed confidence Thursday that Türkiye would cease purchasing Russian oil during his White House meeting with Erdogan, part of broader discussions on bilateral relations and regional issues.
