Russia has called on Japan to remove U.S. Typhon missile systems deployed on the Japanese island of Kyushu, saying their presence poses a threat to Russian national security and regional security, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
In a written statement, Zakharova said Russia had delivered a protest note to the Japanese Embassy in Moscow on Sept. 3 over the deployment of the U.S. missile systems.
Zakharova said Japan had been informed that the deployment of the systems on its territory was unacceptable regardless of the justification or the length of time they remained there.
"The Japanese side was informed that the deployment of these systems on its territory, under any pretext and for any period of time, is unacceptable," Zakharova said.
She said Moscow demanded that Japan end such actions and remove the missile systems from its territory.
Zakharova also said Japan should accept the outcome of World War II, including the territorial issue involving the South Kuril Islands, and abandon what she described as its rearmament policy.
She added that China had also delivered a similar protest note to Japan.
