Russian ambassador to Armenia summoned to Moscow for consultations amid strained relations
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summons its ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopyrkin, for consultations in Moscow
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday that Sergey Kopyrkin, its ambassador to Armenia, has been called back to Moscow for consultations.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, confirmed the development in a written statement, saying, “Russia’s Ambassador to Yerevan Kopyrkin has been summoned to Moscow for consultations.”
Recent months have seen escalating tensions between Russia and Armenia. Armenia has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), of which it is a member. Meanwhile, Russia has criticized Armenia for pursuing closer ties with the United States and the European Union.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has expressed optimism regarding the resolution of issues in Russia-Armenia relations. “We see that Putin and Pashinyan have the political will to resolve this, and we will see what the outcomes are. There is dialogue, there is political will to continue this dialogue. There is mutual interest between the parties, and there is potential for bilateral relations. Therefore, we tend to be more optimistic in this situation,” Peskov stated.
The situation remains dynamic as both nations navigate the complexities of their relationship amidst broader geopolitical shifts.
