A senior Russian general was killed when a car bomb exploded under his vehicle in southern Moscow early Monday morning, with investigators saying Ukrainian special forces are suspected of involvement.
"The bomb detonated under the Kia Sorento driven by Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Department within the Russian General Staff, as he left a parking space at 06:55 Moscow time (03:55 GMT) on Yasenyova Street," Russia's Investigative Committee said.
"As a result of the injuries sustained, the head of the Operational Training Department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, died," Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said.
The investigators published a video showing the wrecked car, with blood visible on the driver's seat.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.
"The driver of the exploded Kia in Moscow turned out to be Lieutenant General of the Russian Armed Forces Fanil Sarvarov — the military officer died from the injuries he sustained. He had multiple shrapnel wounds to his legs and closed fractures of the facial bone," Russian media outlet Mash wrote on Telegram.
Since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv has been blamed for several attacks targeting Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin personalities in Russia and Russian-occupied Ukrainian regions.
