A ship targeted by Yemen's Houthi rebels has sunk in the Red Sea after days of taking on water, officials reported Saturday.
This marks the first vessel to be fully destroyed amid their campaign over Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
The Rubymar, attacked on Feb. 18 in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, was drifting northward. Yemen's internationally recognized government and a regional military source confirmed the ship's sinking. The official requested anonymity as the information hadn't been cleared for release.
Yemen's exiled government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition since 2015, stated the Rubymar sank Friday amid stormy Red Sea weather. The ship had been abandoned for 12 days post-attack, with tentative plans to tow it to safety.
The Iran-backed Houthis, previously claiming the ship sank swiftly after the attack, have not yet acknowledged its sinking.
